The sensor revolution is here.
In the 1980s, the PC revolution put computers at our fingertips. In the 1990s, the internet revolution connected us to an information web that spans the planet. Today the sensor revolution is using that technology to monitor and manipulate the physical world on our behalf. Its impact and influence on business and society is far-reaching and the opportunities are tremendous.
On June 29th, at Putteridge Bury Conference Centre, the Knowledge Network will provide a unique opportunity to look directly into one of its most innovative Research Departments - the Institute of Research in the Applied Natural Sciences (LIRANS). Members of the LIRANS team will be giving us some penetrating insights into how their research into sensor technology is making a significant contribution to innovation in industry and health services. And from the world of business, one company that is already undertaking pioneering work in health innovation - Probe Scientific - will complete a fascinating programme of talks.
Speakers
Professor Tiantian Zhang, Director of LIRANS, will give an overview of the exciting work taking place in LIRANS. This includes the University’s very important contribution to the Frozen Ark project (an international collaboration of institutions devoted to saving the DNA and viable cells of endangered species). And its Scientific Services facility which provides company personnel with access to advanced equipment (the Unit houses one of the most sophisticated confocal microscopes in the country), facilities and expertise for their own research.
Dr Barry Haggett, Head of the Sensor Research Group, will explain how sensor technology is already having a significant impact on our private and business lives, often without us even being aware. And how the University’s Sensor Research Group is playing an important part in the sensor revolution - it already has a proven track record of developing products and expertise for industry, food and health services.
Mark O’Connell, Technical Director of Probe Scientific, will reveal how his company has brought to market technologies that are having a radical impact on the provision of health care . For example, Probe has manufactured a device that works with biosensor technology to monitor blood glucose levels without the need to withdraw blood from patients. This device could have life-saving consequences for the monitoring and control of medical conditions such as diabetes. Mark will also talk about Probe’s business model: how they started as a research organisation in the Bedford i-Lab, managed steady growth through developing innovative products to solve clinical problems and improve healthcare, and today are looking to get to the next level through commercialising its substantial product pipeline based on its proprietary technologies.
Sensor technology is here but it’s only the start of things to come. Come to this event to find out more about what the future holds and the opportunities this opens up for businesses and society.
