No subject is attracting more debate, emotional disagreement or controversy than that of climate change.

True or False? Fact or Fiction?
Tempers have flared as allegations about “fixing the data” and “doom predicting” have been scattered around, but whatever your viewpoints on climate change or global warming, there is demonstrable evidence that the world's environment is changing fast.

The issues and the arguments are of interest to all of us - citizens, business people, old, young, male and female.

On May 19th the Knowledge Network will host a discussion and debate session on some of the key topics within this subject area. The aim of this event is to unearth some of the latest research that will help us understand and assess the consequences of some of these changes.

This talk is an opportunity for you to:

  • seek real facts and answers to key questions
  • make balanced judgements about what is going on and what can be done
  • look at some practical steps one company is taking to help the next generation

Speakers and topics:

‘Facts vs. Fiction’ - Professor Alan Barrell

Professor Barrell leads an important project in Bedfordshire called ’The Climate Change Campus’ and will draw from the publicised and factual work of experts such as Professor David McKay and Professor Lawrence Stern, authors of ‘Sustainable Energy Without Hot Air’. The material being presented to the Government by its Chief Advisors will be summarised and offered for debate.

‘Why Conservation Matters’ - Professor James Crabbe

Professor Crabbe, whose environmental monitoring research is internationally renowned, will talk about how good science can lead to conservation actions which would benefit millions of people worldwide. He will use the example of coral reefs - the “canaries of climate change” - to show that what happens in one part of the world affects us all. He will also relate exciting work on structures as old as the Great Barrier Reef, which is at risk from climate change, to the modern world and its importance to the next generation and the future.

'Spreading the Good News and Good Advice'
- Simon Hall

Simon is the Director of Ecostyle Ltd, one of the region’s most innovative companies. He will show how imaginative approaches to informing, educating and involving can take the mystery out of climate change and make renewable energy a subject of excitement and engagement for all of us.

As always at the Knowledge Network there will be time for discussion and questions and we are inviting “Questions in Advance” so that the speakers can incorporate answers into their talks. We want this to be an open discussion and for the audience to have their real concerns addressed.
