Is your computer system under attack? Would you know if hackers hijacked your system and took control of your resources? Have you ever worked out the value of the information that you hold, whether business or private?

Computer systems open to the outside world are constantly at risk to intruders looking to attack vulnerabilities. Not only could your system be infected or your data compromised, but your resources could be used to attack other systems.

And it's not only small businesses or private users who are vulnerable. In recent years, large organisations, with some of the most sophisticated security systems available have been compromised, costing hundreds of thousands of pounds to remedy.

The good news, however, is that there are tools and strategies that can be implemented to protect your information and minimise the risk to your system.

Research in the areas of Computer Science and Informatics at the University has been rated as 'internationally excellent', with a strong focus on Computer Security and Computer Forensics.

The speakers for this event will be experts from these fields with an excellent record in collaborative research, particularly with local companies. They will reveal some innovative tools to enable users to employ computer technology more efficiently and effectively to protect their systems today, and discuss strategies to set up preventative measures to avoid attacks in the future.

The highlight of the event will be a practical demonstration of how a hacker can exploit vulnerabilities in a computer system. The team will set up a perfectly working computer system and then 'attack' it. They will show how the attacker takes control of the system, covers his tracks from the users of the system by creating a 'backdoor' and hides it using a 'rootkit'. You can see exactly what these and other terms such as 'trojan', 'exploit', and 'hack' actually mean when applied to a real system. They will also demonstrate how the resources of this computer system can be used to attack other systems without the user of knowing.

Maintaining security of your information is paramount. This event will equip you with the tools and information to feel confident that you can reduce that risk to a minimum.
